Observations from a middle-aged cat lover who enjoys messing with people's minds.

I appear to have lost my default skins/themes/visual styles for XP. Any idea how to get them back? I posted this in the general forum before I noticed the "help discussion", sorry. My email is poddytat@msn.com thank you!

Go on a search and type in Luna.msstyle. If you do have the file, then you have the skins. Go to the themes tab in display and find the add more themes and then go find the file, wherever the search said it was.

Ok, now it's telling me that the service isn't started, but it is. Grrr. I'll try what you said and see if it helps. Thank you very much for your help.

I started to ask if you had disabled the service the other day, and got distracted.......... here's what you need to do..

Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > scroll down to Themes > double-click the entry, and a dialog should popup. Click the Start button. You may also want to set the Startup type to Automatic, and click OK.

Your problem should be solved!

I wouldn't play around with the theming service. It messsed my computer up.

Really Travis? Care to read your own threads, and statements of the things you've done to your OS? I don't recall the Themeing service ever being mentioned, but I do seem to remember hacked system files, deletion of explorer.exe, and etc..... but now you say it's the Theme service that caused the trouble?

If the Theme service is turned off, you can't use the default Luna skins, until you turn it back on.

Thanks guys, but the theme service is running and it is in default startup/automatic mode. It's driving me nuts. I don't have a clue what I did wrong, or what I can do.. I have even tried to reinstall windows components with the cd but that didn't help. AAAAGGGHHHH >

Travis I enjoy hearing about your experimentations. They are a good read

I learned my lesson, and now I share it. don't turn stuff off that you aren't 100% positive will affect your computer. and don't mess with stuff that has the system file protection.

and for poddytat. unload windowblinds. check in c:\windows\resources\themes\ and see if there is an entry for luna.theme there. if there is double click it and display properties should show up. click apply and luna should load if your theming service is on. if there isn't and there isn't a folder called luna then you don't have it on your computer anymore (which I doubt)

errmm. click on run in the startmenu and type in services.msc.

find the entry called themes and right click on it and choose properites. make sure that the path to executable is
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" without quotes. that it is set on automatic and that it is started. then click ok. close the services window and restart computer. try my step above again
